No Decision IS a Decision
The challenge for many is that they don’t always know what the right decision to make is or how to stick with it when things get tough. Many people get stuck in the decision-making process because they are afraid of making the wrong choice. This fear paralyzes them and prevents them from taking action on anything that needs to be done.
Here are the 2 steps to make a decision and move in the direction of success in your business and personal life.
1. Your responsibilities. The first step is to understand that you have a responsibility as a leader, to yourself, your team, and your customers to make decisions about what would be the ideal situation. Write it down and then determine what is the gap between the now and then. Go through the who and what is needed to achieve the desirable situation/goal. Think strongly of ONLY what you really want and don’t get paralyzed wondering if you can do achieve it.
Stop thinking about what could go wrong and start focusing on why it will work. The only wrong decision is the one that you do not make. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the “how’s” of getting it done. Focus ONLY on how amazing it will be once you have achieved the goal.
2. Evaluate all your options to make an informed decision. The second step is being able to evaluate each option available so you can make an informed decision about which path will lead you towards success. Make sure you take time to think through all the details and look at things from different angles.
Write them all down and allow others to offer their input (their input is to stimulate your thinking even though you may not take their suggestions). Let them know that gathering input does not guarantee you will incorporate their ideas. This is very important that your staff understand this concept, so their feelings are not hurt, should you decide to not incorporate their ideas. Foster a culture of sharing without obligation to take every piece of advice from your staff.
If necessary, break down a big decision into smaller parts so that each part can be considered separately. This makes it easier for you to weigh the good and bad points of each option without getting overwhelmed by everything.
Once these 2 strategies have been completed, it’s time for action!
